Section 2
(East):
- Old Military Trail (OMT) Public Use
Area is a major trailhead for Perry Lake Trail, complete with
ample parking for groups. An information kiosk with maps and contact
information is located at the trailhead. This kiosk was built by Troop 351
(Shawnee) in March 2006.
- The parking area is a starting point
for hikes on Section 2 (to the west) or Section 3 (to the east).
- A walk-in hiker's
campground is maintained at the first road loop within
the park. This site includes an amphitheater, fire ring and
shelter. The hiker's campground is approximately 0.4 miles in from
the trailhead and accessible via a spur trail marked in white
paint blazes.
- Water is available nearby (within OMT
park) during park facility camping season (April -
October).
- At 0.6 mile (from the OMT trailhead)
you will reach a small foot bridge.
This was the first bridge on Perry Lake Trail, and was put in
place by volunteers from Kansas Trails Council and Sierra Club in
1997.
- At 1.2 miles (from the OMT
trailhead) you will reach bluff top views of the lake.
- At 2.2 miles (from the OMT
trailhead) you will reach the Dorothy Moore Memorial Park
Bench. This park bench was put in place by volunteers from
Kansas City Outdoor Club.
- At 3.5 miles you will reach Old Quarry
Road. On the other side of the road, to the north, you will find
another foot bridge. Like
other newer bridges along the trail, this bridge was put in place
by volunteer Eagle Scouts earning their merit badges. Material and
technical support for these projects was provided by Westar
Energy's Green Team.

Section 2 (West):
- At Old Quarry Road you will cross the
foot bridge described
above.
- This portion of Perry Lake Trail
offers many bluff top views of the lake, Ozawkie, and Old Town
Public Use Area.
- Approximately 0.3 miles before
reaching Old Quarry Road you will cross the dam of a small pond.
This is a nice place to stop and rest; or just enjoy the
view.
- The Richard Douthit Memorial Park
Bench is located approximately one mile north of the
Longview Public Use Area park road. This site provides excellent
views of the main channel of Perry Lake, to the southwest.
- Ideal parking locations for hikes
along this portion of the trail are at the top of Old Quarry Road
or near the road crossing within Longview Public Use Area (the
northern park road is open during park facility camping
season (April - October).
- The trail segment within Longview
Park, between the northern park road and the east park road, is
0.5 miles in length.
- An ideal day hike loop would be to
start at Old Quarry Road OR south of Apple Valley Farm and hike to
the other end. Then, follow the road for about 0.5 miles to
complete the loop and return to your vehicle. Total hiking
distance for this loop would be about 5.2 miles. After your hike,
stop by the saloon at Apple Valley
Farm!
