Richard Douthit, our friend and mentor.

Richard Douthit in a 1992 photo: Our friend and mentor served as Trail Coordinator from 1991 to 1994 and recruited many of us to volunteer for Perry Lake Trail. Richard, a communications professor at Emporia State University, led many trail workshops and maintenance outings at Perry. Richard introduced many of us to "Coweeta Dips" and other trail design concepts. A memorial park bench for Richard is located on Section 2 of Perry Lake Trail.

The Richard Douthit Memorial Park Bench was installed near the shoreline in a small cove just north of Longview Park, along Section 2. The site offers long distance views of the lake to the south and west. This is a peaceful setting along the trail to enjoy sailboats, waterfowl, or just a warm, sunny day.

The park bench was installed by volunteers from the Corps of Engineers, Kansas City Outdoor Club and Kansas Trails Council in June 2005. This was a National Trails Day registered event in that year. The Corps generously provided the bench materials used at the site and brought the materials to the site by boat. Nearest trail access point is approximately one mile away.

Volunteers set the park bench in the ground and anchor posts in concrete.
