Dorothy Moore, one of the original founders of Perry Lake Trail.

Dorothy Moore in a 1994 photo: Dorothy served as Trail Coordinator from 1994 to 1998. Dorothy was a founding member and past president of Kansas Trails Council and one of the original visionaries of Perry Lake Trail. Through countless trips to Perry from 1976-1978, Dorothy and others scouted the area and built the trail. A memorial park bench for Dorothy is located on Section 2 of Perry Lake Trail.

This avid outdoorswoman and the mother of five children also taught orienteering and backpacking classes at Johnson County Parks and Recreation, and Johnson County Community College. Dorothy had earned a private pilot’s license and reported local meteorological information to the weather bureau. Some of the lessons we learned from Dorothy include backcountry etiquette (“leave no footprints”) and the importance of community involvement.

Some of the dedicated volunteers putting a memorial park bench in on a cold November day. The Dorothy Moore Memorial Park Bench was installed at Solitude Point along Section 2. The site offers a bluff top view of Little Slough Creek valley to the east and northeast. During normal pool elevation or above, the cove directly below is part of the lake. Waterfowl, eagles and beaver are often seen in this area.

The park bench was installed by volunteers from Kansas City Outdoor Club in November 2004. The Corps generously provided the bench materials used at the site. The Trail Coordinator canoed in two bags of concrete prior to work outing, but two more were needed to complete the job. Those where brought in from nearest access point about one mile away. KCOC volunteers enjoyed a sunny day with cooler weather, but had to chisel through bedrock to set the park bench posts!

The park bench, installed and ready for hikers to enjoy the view. When looking for a site to put in a park bench, avoid large slabs of limestone right under the surface!
